Eadfrith was the scribe of the Lindisfarne Gospels and, from 698, Bishop of Lindisfarne. Although a Saxon, he revered Cuthbert (see March 20th) and his work on the Gospels was done to honour his memory. He was also devoted to many of the traditions of Celtic Christian spirituality. His designs in the Gospels make free use of Irish geometric designs. He restored Cuthbert’s oratory on Inner Farne for Felgild (see March 23rd) to use. When the Vikings sacked Holy Island, Eadfrith’s remains were taken along with Cuthbert’s on their long journey to keep them safe.
What a wonderful work, Lord, to copy out the Gospels, and beautify the pages, for others to learn of the love and service of Jesus our Saviour. Thank You for all who have made, and still make, Your word available in the world. Help me to play my part, by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, to the glory of Your name. Amen.
