Monk and hermit.. Born of Scandinavian parents at Whitby and named Tostig – but changed his name to William to avoid ridicule. He had a wild youth, but suddenly refused marriage, went to Norway and became a priest there. Spent three years in English parish ministry. Became a monk at Durham in late 1140s and took the name of Bartholomew. He had a vision of Christ on the Rood turning His head towards him and stretching out His arms out to embrace him. Went as hermit to Inner Farne and remained there most of the next 42 years. He prayed, worked and sang. His most difficult times were the two periods when he had to share the island with another hermit, but he was otherwise always cheerful and generous in welcoming his many visitors.
