Jesus told his followers that they can learn about God’s love and goodness from watching birds and seeing how they are provided for. Christians throughout the ages have taken that lesson to heart, including Celtic saints like Cuthbert who was perhaps the first Briton to argue for protecting birds—like the local Eider Duck to whom Cuthbert offered sanctuary on the Farne Islands.
