MAY 2013

03-05 Fri—Sun   CONTEMPLATIVE AWARENESS    £120

A led retreat that draws on the wisdom of Celtic Spirituality to help us learn to see the simplest of daily tasks as a sacrament. We will explore aspects of contemplative life and prayer and how these can be expressed in everyday ordinariness.

06-09 Mon-Thur       CARVINGS AND MUSIC           £165

Woodcarvings and music can reach beyond words into the deep places and wisdom within us.  Christopher Lewis offers some of his carvings, with music that relates to them, as a different way of being open to God.  There will also be an opportunity to use clay, as a way of playing/praying with God.

Christopher taught himself to work with wood when he was a missionary in Borneo.  Thirty years later, when he was a residentiary canon at Bradford Cathedral, he was asked to provide some carvings for an exhibition by local artists.  Only then did he begin a process that led to him, in retirement, to offering retreats based on his work.

 10-12 Fri—Sun            A TIME FOR EVERYTHING        £100
                                              Ecclesiastes 3:1

Join in with the life of the house based on the monastic daily rhythm of prayer, work, study/reflection, solitude and community. No set programme or teaching provided, apart from an introduction on Friday night.  Just time to come and be yourself.

13-16 Mon-Thur                    ROOTS AND RHYTHMS:                      £165
Practising the presence of God in the midst of life, a driven society and a consumerist culture

We will be exploring how we might find a way of life that is rooted in God and is shaped and informed by a rhythm of life that provides stability, spontaneity and sustenance.  These ‘roots and rhythms’ can reflect Christ-likeness and ways of being that are life-giving.

17-19  Fri-Sun              FOLLOW THE EXAMPLE: ST. BRENDAN         £120

Irish monks used boats called coracles to travel on the ocean in search of a ‘desert place‘ in which to commune with God.  One of the most famous of these monks is Brendan, who set out from the West coast of Ireland in search of paradise. During this retreat, we’ll hear some of the tales of Irish monks on their journeys and reflect on the coracle as a symbol of contemporary Christian living.

20-23 Mon-Thur      LISTENING TO THE HEARTBEAT OF GOD:
                                                Individually-Guided Retreat                         £165

In the Gospel of John, we find the Beloved Disciple at the Last Supper, leaning against Jesus, lying on his breast, reclining… presumably he was near enough to hear his heartbeat, if he chose to listen.  This is a time to receive individual support and guidance as you to draw near to Christ as his Beloved One.

24-26 Fri-Sun                    HOUSE CLOSED

27-01 Mon-Sat                   FAMILY WEEK                  £270

An opportunity for families to be together, sharing in the life and rhythm of Nether Springs and to use this home as a base for holiday exploration in Northumberland.

JUNE 2013

02 Sun TRUSTEES MEETING

03-06  Mon—Thur     COMMUNITY INTRODUCTION                    £165

An introductory week outlining the history, vocation and novitiate process of the Northumbria Community.  An essential week for all who want to explore their relationship with the Community.   Retreat includes a pilgrimage on Wednesday.
Please note: participation in the Monday evening session is essential.

07-09  Fri-Sun           DANCING  'CELTIC DAILY PRAYER'          £120

Come and learn or enjoy again the dances that go with our Daily Office, including a new dance for The Lord’s Prayer.  Andy Raine will lead us, and Anna Raine will perform a concert on Saturday night.  A weekend of music and movement to express and deepen faith.

10-13 Mon-Thur                 CELTIC SITES AND SAINTS         £185

A chance to journey with the Celtic Saints whose spirituality and witness not only served the renewal of the Church but shaped culture in their own day and beyond.  The example of Aidan, Cuthbert, Oswald, Hild and many others has inspired the Northumbria Community and provided a foundation for our Way for Living. This retreat offers an opportunity for the example of their lives to shape our own, as well as pilgrimages to local Celtic sites.  Led by Norm and Ingrid Cumming.

14-16 Fri-Sun                  I STILL AND QUIET MY SOUL      £100
                                                          Psalm 131

Spend time with God within the daily life and rhythm of the community at Nether Springs. No set programme or teaching provided, apart from an introduction on the first night.  Just time to come and be yourself.

17-20 Mon-Thur                 WHO IS IT THAT YOU SEEK?         £165

In the first chapter of The Gospel of John, Jesus asks this question of two of John the Baptist’s disciples when they follow him one afternoon.  The Gospel then turns the tables and has others asking Jesus questions—and some of them are pretty tough ones! Together we will explore the questions that Jesus is asked, and ask them for ourselves as well.

21-23 Fri-Sun                       LEARN FROM THE BIRDS            £120

Jesus told his followers that they can learn about God’s love and goodness from watching birds and seeing how they are provided for. Christians throughout the ages have taken that lesson to heart, including Celtic saints like Cuthbert who was perhaps the first Briton to argue for protecting birds—like the local Eider Duck, who Cuthbert offered sanctuary to on the Farne Islands.

Come and enjoy Northumbrian birds with Mark Winter—someone with a passion for and over 40 years of experience of watching them.  Discover both the rich variety of birds we have locally and the lessons they can teach us.

24-27 Mon-Thur                       BEING WHO YOU ARE:
                  Individually-Guided Retreat          £165

Spiritual formation is cooperating with the inner work of transformation the Spirit of God is seeking to accomplish in you.  The Spirit’s purpose is not to turn you into a different person, but to make you into the best ‘you’ that you can be.  An opportunity to explore, with the support of your retreat guide such questions as: What helps you to be more the person you believe God has made you to be?  What is squeezing you into a mould and hindering you from being who you really are?  How well do the roles you play and the responsibilities you carry fit with the person you are?
