Through the year with the Saints

A pupil of Dyfrig and Paul Aurelian, and a cousin of St David, whom he succeeded as Bishop of St David's. During the plague he spent seven years away from Wales with Samson at Dol in Brittany. His main foundation was at Llandeilo Fawr. One of the sayings attributed to him is: ‘Do not do injury, if you can possibly avoid it’ – a challenging admonition.
Daughter of Eanfleda and Oswy. Consecrated to God from infancy in thanksgiving for Oswy’s victory in battle over Penda of Mercia in 654, she was given to the care of Hild at Hartlepool. She eventually became joint-abbess at Whitby with her mother Eanfleda. A friend of Cuthbert, she met with him on Coquet Island to ask his insights. She was also mediator and advocate on behalf of Wilfrid, and is described by Eddius Stephanus as ‘comforter, and best counsellor of the whole province.’
