THE PRACTICE OF THE PRESENCE OF GOD by Brother Lawrence
Review by Wendy Ward
I read this book the other week while preparing to lead a retreat. It took less than half an hour to read and at first glance seemed simplistic and naïve. Then my brain got in gear, which was quite an achievement as I’ve been ill recently and extremely fuzzy headed. As I thought about the points in the book, looked for ways to apply them, and started to try it, I found myself enjoying a sense of Gods presence that I’ve not experienced for ages. One example is going to the park with Susannah. I now sense God with me as I push her on the swing. Talking with him there is as natural as chatting with the other Mums who I inevitably meet there and swing pushing has become an act of prayer in its own right. If you’re feeling stuck in a rut with prayer, or God seems to have gone off the scene for a while this little gem may help you find a way forward.
