Okay, so it was bad, but I witnessed another example of media manipulation. On the national news for over 3 days we had news coverage of the wintry conditions in North Northumberland. The reporter and camera crew made their way to Rothbury and Longhorsley (spent wrongly in the early news bulletins) but were guilty of some gross exaggeration which obviously made more gripping headlines and better entertainment. It’s sad when sensationalism is seen to be more important than integrity. I drove on the main road through Longhorsley, cautiously but with no problems whatsoever. I was very irritated to see the news reporting that the area was cut off and, of course, it added to the breaking news story to have the reporter standing deep in snow with the backdrop of a road that was engulfed in snow and no vehicle wheel marks. The impression given was that this was a main road. In fact, it was a very minor road leading down to a farm. Of course, the news has moved on and we won’t hear any more reports of North Northumberland now that the London and the South East has got some snow. The pressures that snow brings are many and the impact upon the economy and people’s lives is considerable. My advice? Stay warm, keep safe, look out for your neighbour and recognise that ultimately we are in God’s hands. The Lord of sea and sky … of wind and flame …
