As I’ve said on many occasions I count myself very blessed by my family. One of the blessings is the privilege of being a granddad. Spending a couple of hours with the grandchildren in Belfast included the privilege of reading bedtime stories, including their daily Bible story and saying a prayer with them. I remember doing this with my own children and now to see your own children doing it with their children as well as sharing in the experience yourself, is just a remarkable joy and privilege.
Of course, there was hilarity amidst the serious stuff when Isaac decided that the people of Israel journeyed towards the Promised Land on flying pigs. He had no idea how ironic that idea was but together with his younger brother Patrick, picked up on my laughing to break out into spontaneous giggling which lasted throughout a couple of more miracles and the time of prayer when we prayed for people, what the children had done that day and not forgetting to pray for flying pigs!
It’s great having three grandsons, (Gabriel is in Oxford), each one a real treasure. Equally delightful is having a granddaughter, young Eden who at 4 months has added laughing to her smiling. Throw her up in the air and she chortles away. Drop her and she howls ~ only kidding! Well the bit about dropping her anyway. It makes a change to throw a baby up as opposed to them throwing up on you.
It is little moments like this, reading, chatting, laughing and playing that are life’s simple pleasures and treasures.
