After a pleasant evening out, catching up with a friend over a meal, I retired for an early night in the accommodation block. With only the light from the bedside table, I filled a glass of water and drank it before getting into bed. Two hours later, I woke and flew down the corridor to the nearest loo. I will spare you the details but suffice to say that this is a very rare experience for me. I spent the night with various stomach pains and frequent visits to the aforementioned place. Rising in the morning, I turned the taps on again in the sink in my room and in the light of the new day dawn, discovered the offending brown water! Apparently there had been a flood in the boiler room and at the breakfast apologies were issued all round and I felt it wiser not to say anything but to pray that I may soon recover and not require another similar aforementioned place as I spoke at a conference that day. My prayers were answered, although it took several days for the various bacteria and goodness knows what else, to work through my system but the moral of the story is ~ when you are in the dark, mind what you are drinking or you’ll end up in the shit. Now, for those who aren’t offended and for others who are now creasing with laughter at my expense – read on because here’s the serious point: when you are in the dark, spiritually or in any other way be careful what you consume. It’s a temptation when life is tough or God seems absent to be careless and to suffer the consequences. A cautionary tale!
