WALK ACROSS OVER LONDON

The vision of WALK ACROSS OVER LONDON came in an early morning prayer meeting at the Bear Church in Deptford on February 11 th.

The phrase WALK ACROSS OVER LONDON can be thought of in two ways… Firstly there is the concept of prayer walking across London from north to south and from east to west forming a cross and secondly there is the idea of taking an actual cross over London as well.

Last year was the last year of seven Walk the Walls circular prayer walks around London . The vision of WALK ACROSS OVER LONDON very much flows from that. After praying around the city for seven years, now is the time to walk and pray right in to the heart of it. (cf Joshua 6)

Surely it is significant that the coat of arms of the Corporation of London has a red cross in the central position. The motto of London beneath, which is about 400 years old, is “Domine Dirige Nos” – that is “Lord lead us.” Prayer walking across London as the “Lord leads us” is simply one way to re-establish the cross over London . On the north-south section we will include high points such as Alexandra Palace , Primrose Hill, Crystal Palace and Riddlesdown where we will literally raise the cross over London .

WALK ACROSS OVER LONDON will take place from September 5-12. This is conceptually the first week in the new year after the summer holidays and a good time to pray for schools and for the city as it gets back into business. People will be able to nail their prayers for London onto the cross during the week.

The plan is to walk 3 days north to south from Kitt’s End north of Barnet to Old Coulsdon, south of Croydon and 4 days east to west from Erith to Staines using the Thames Path. Prayer would be going on as we walk during the day and then the church where we stop would be responsible for overnight prayer, so it fits with the 24-7 London Prayer programme. On Saturday September 8 th on the very pleasant walk between Wandsworth and Kingston-on-Thames , prayer activities for children will be planned.

WALK ACROSS OVER LONDON is an initiative of 24-7 London Prayer and is also endorsed by Walk the Walls, M25 Prayernet, London Prayer.net, Greater London Prayer Wall, Prayer Expeditions and Youth With A Mission and also by Jane Holloway, Prayer and Evangelism Co-ordinator at the Evangelical Alliance. As an expression of the unity between these prayer movements, a different prayer movement will take responsibility for each day.

How you can help

We will have a core team of no more than 20 people who will do the whole walk. The cost for participants will be £100. We also welcome others to come and join us for days or half days of prayer walking. Please also register with us at £5 per person as we would need to inform the police if numbers were large. If you are interested in applying for the core team, please contact us via the following websites below.

We also want to especially make contact with churches along that line between Barnet and Croydon and churches near the River Thames. Again please contact us.
